About
Welcome to the Taylor Run Citizens Association (TRCA) blog. Taylor Run is a unique and welcoming community conveniently located in the independent City of Alexandria where history and nature intersect. See www.taylorrunalexandria.com for additional information.
The Basics
The Taylor Run Citizens Association (TRCA) is a non-profit, non-partisan 501(c)(4) association for the Taylor Run community of approximately 1,000 households, including residents, businesses, and property owners in Alexandria, Virginia.. The TRCA’s purpose is to promote the general welfare of the community and its residents. We do our best to keep members informed of many aspects affecting our community, including land use, transportation, public safety, public schools, parks and recreation facilities, and other major issues impacting the quality of life within our community.
History
The TRCA was founded in September, 1964 when developers proposed large-scale housing developments near MacArthur Elementary. Successful in this initial cause, the TRCA has been active over the last several decades in both protecting community interests and promoting neighborhood improvements.
Activities/Events
Lately, the TRCA has been particularly active in community beautification, traffic calming, land use, City Commissions, crime prevention, area recreation, pedestrian safety, Eco-City, and other matters impacting the quality of life in our community.
In addition to these activities, the TRCA sponsors two scholarships for high school students from our community to help them continue their education (see www.taylorrunalexandria.com/blog/?p=175 for additional information) as well as the TRCA Good Neighbor Award for a MacArthur Elementary student noted at the beginning of this email.
What’s on the Horizon?
Increased communications through the TRCA blog (www.taylorrunalexadria.com/blog) and Yahoo! Groups, TRCA updates in the Alexandria Gazette, a TRCA area history webpage, an expanded listserv, facebook (you can join our group now @ www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=87075079264 which will soon feature RSS feeds from our blog, etc.), membership polling (a way of letting us know what’s important to you), online membership renewal, online event registration, community real estate updates (information provided by TRCA member Jennifir Whistle), and advertising/sponsorship opportunities.
Meetings
The TRCA holds a general membership meeting each fall (October 22, 2009) and spring (March 18, 2010) at the George Washington National Masonic Memorial. Meetings usually last between one and two hours. The Executive Committee generally meets every other month and on an as-needed basis.
Membership
The membership year runs from January 1 through December 31, and the annual dues are $10 per household. The TRCA utilizes these dues for several purposes, including funding scholarships, the neighborhood fall party, National Night Out, and earth day event(s). Dues also are used to pay for printing the newsletters, special events, and maintenance of the TRCA website. Members have the right to receive our newsletters; be informed about community affairs; submit requests for consideration to the Executive Committee; and vote in annual elections as well as other TRCA matters. How Can You Help?
We can always use volunteers for any of our activities and events. As noted above, the success of our park clean-up program is dependent upon a steady stream of volunteers. In addition, our website is a great opportunity for anyone looking to develop their web design and database skills while also assisting the community.
Finally, the TRCA is not limited to historical activities. This is your association. Let us have your ideas and suggestions.
