Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trail Opened

June 13th, 2009 No comments

The Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trail recently opened on the northern bridge span of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge providing a much-anticipated connection between Alexandria and Prince George’s County. In Maryland, the trail links to the Potomac Waterfront Community Park, National Harbor, the Potomac Heritage Trail and Bolling Air Force Base. In Virginia, it feeds into the Washington Street deck, which, in turn, connects to Mount Vernon, Alexandria-Arlington-DC, the Washington and Old Dominion Trail and the trail to U.S. Route 1.

The trail is a comfortable 12 feet wide (enclosed by side fences) and 1.1 mile long.  It includes informational signs about local history and ecology and landscaping on each shore giving it the feel of a linear park.  There are also three overlooks on the span with additional signage, mounted binoculars/telescopes, benches , and northern views of Alexandria and Washington D.C.

On the Virginia side, the trail begins at the Washington Street deck which essentially a large overpass, that the Beltway travels under, with park like features.  Additional trails to US 1 and the Mount Vernon Trail are adjacent.  Embedded compass-like wayfinders provide riders/walkers with guidance to these points.

Note that Construction on Maryland’s deckover and the path to National Harbor will continue through September but will not impede cyclist or pedestrian use of the facility.

Another trail is scheduled to open in Summer 2010, which will connect the east side of Telegraph Road at Huntington Avenue with Eisenhower Avenue and the Holmes Run Trail.

Public Hearing on Moving City Council, School Board Elections – Saturday, June 13

June 12th, 2009 No comments

The Alexandria City Council will hold a public hearing at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall, 301 King St., to receive comments on a proposal to move City Council and School Board elections from May to November, beginning in 2012. The proposed ordinance would make no other changes to the electoral process (such as changing the length of Council or School Board terms, or staggering elections), since any other change would require the General Assembly to approve an amendment to the City Charter. A copy of the proposed ordinance, and additional information, can be found at http://dockets.alexandriava.gov/fy09/051609ph/di6.pdf

Civil War Sesquicentennial Community Planning Meeting

June 5th, 2009 No comments

On behalf of the Historic Alexandria Resources Commission, the Office of  Historic Alexandria and Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association will co-sponsor a Civil War Sesquicentennial community planning meeting on Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to noon. The meeting will be held at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, 101 Callahan Drive, Alexandria, and free parking is available. This meeting is open to all, and public participation is most welcome.

The purpose of the meeting will be to gather public input and refine ideas for Alexandria¹s commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. As part of the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission, a local committee is to be formed as part of a statewide effort to develop a greater  understanding of the cause, impact and aftermath of the war, based on the  theme ³Understanding Our Past, Embracing Our Future.² Activities associated with this initiative are planned to take place from 2011 to 2015.

As part of the June 6 program, representatives from each of Alexandria¹s  history museums will give short presentations on plans, ideas or suggestions  for participation in the upcoming anniversary remembrance.  Following the  presentations, those attending will break into small groups to gather and  refine recommendations on how Alexandria should best proceed with this commemorative effort.

Alexandria¹s Civil War heritage is very unique because it reflects the history of the Union, the Confederacy and African Americans. The overwhelming majority  of Alexandrians were loyal to the South, with one of its most prominent citizens, General Robert E. Lee, commanding the Confederacy¹s Army of Northern Virginia, and hundreds of men from Alexandria serving with the Confederate Army.

Although Virginia had voted to secede from the Union in 1861, Alexandria played an unusual role due to its proximity to the federal capital and occupation by Union forces throughout the war. In addition to being used as a center for military supplies, transportation and medical care throughout the war period, Alexandria was also the site of a major Union earthwork  fortification known as Fort Ward, built to defend the capital against an attack from the west.  Now the best surviving example of the ³Defenses of Washington,² Fort Ward was restored by the City of Alexandria in the early 1960s to commemorate the Civil War Centennial.

The Union presence in Alexandria made it a destination for enslaved African Americans seeking freedom. Thousands of refugees arrived here, but without adequate food, shelter and medical care, hundreds of them died. The military authority ordered that a cemetery be established in 1864 and over the next five years, approximately 1,800 people were buried there before the federal government abandoned the cemetery. In 2007, the City acquired the site, today known as the Contraband and Freedmen¹s Cemetery Memorial.

The June 6 program will assist Historic Alexandria Resources Commission, the Office of Historic Alexandria and Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association in developing a plan that reflects these and other themes of Alexandria¹s Civil War heritage.
