This past Thursday, Ms. Evan Metz and Ms. Jessica Raugitinane were presented with a TRCA Scholarship to help them continue their education.
Evan and Jessica were selected via an anonymous process by a committee from the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria (SFA) based on academic record, extracurricular activities, community service, and other attributes.
Evan will attend the University of Virginia. She is currently undecided, but leaning towards studying international relations.
Jessica will attend the University of Connecticut to study elementary education in a unique program offering both a BA and MA during the course of 5 years. Click here for Jessica’s note of thanks.
The TRCA scholarship is one of four sponsored by civic associations in Alexandria. SFA will award over 200 scholarships valued at $359,000 to help members of the T.C. Williams Class of 2009 continue their education. For additional information about SFA, see http://alexscholarshipfund.org.

The tree-lined streets in the TRCA community are attractive, but tree roots that buckle sidewalks are a common cause of tripping hazards. Trees planted between sidewalks and curbs (an area also known as “the utility strip” because that’s where power lines and telephone poles are commonly located) have little room to grow. As a result, the roots of such trees naturally expand their territory in the search for space, water, and nutrients, buckling sidewalks in the process.
Recently, the sidewalk outside our home buckled several inches as the two 50+ year old maples planted in the utility strip in front of our house continued to expand. Fortunately, once we notified the City of Alexandria of the tripping hazards, a sidewalk crew appeared within 2 days and completed the repair within a couple weeks (rainy conditions contributed to a slight delay between removing the old sidewalk pouring concrete). I was most impressed with the City’s responsiveness and repair work. The trees are still there delivering their magnificence, but the sidewalk is no longer a tripping hazard.
To report a sidewalk tripping hazard to the City of Alexandria simply fill out this online form.
Jennifer and Allen Collins are looking for a responsible cat lover to feed and clean up after their cats a couple days a week during the summer (for pay). If interested, please contact jen@paleobio.org.

Guest speaker Dr. Donald Shoup has extensively studied parking as a key link between transportation and land use, with important consequences for cities, the economy, and the environment. His research on municipal parking policies has led cities to charge fair market prices for curb parking and to dedicate the resulting meter revenue to finance added public services in the metered districts.
